Thank God It's Friday!!

It’s been nearly a month since I started working as an OFFICE ASSISTANT on 13 November. I really love this job because the wage is desirable, the experience of working overseas is interesting and exciting, it’s a good opportunity to restart my career from scratch in UK, and this company is a friendly environment to work and staff are all very nice to me.

Regarding my main duties, it ranges from simple tasks like posting, faxing and photocopying to more complicated tasks like confirming sales order, posting purchase invoices, posting receipts of payment,…etc. In a word, I’ll be doing what I’m told to do no matter how easy or how difficult it is. Because it’s a very small company, there’s no specific job description of my job, which is quite different from TSMC. Also because of it, sometimes I can have tea/coffee served by my colleagues even though I’m very new here.

There is no exclusion or discrimination here yet I still find it quite hard to involve in their conversations especially when they are talking about things that revolve their cultural backgrounds. You know, different accent mingling together is quite terrible for me to understand, therefore, as you can imagine, I’m considered as a very quite person, which is an unusual impression of me. HAHAHA, a quite Joy!! I can’t believe it myself. Frankly speaking, I wish I could be a chatty Joy again in the future!!

Before I started working, I was expecting that my first day here would be as bored as I was when I started my first day in TSMC. BUT…..things will never turn up as what you expect. I was so busy being telling to do this and to do that. At the same time, I had to keep notes about what had been taught without really understanding the meaning and the logic of it. Also, Dave, the Managing Director who sits opposite me was very passionate to tell me his working history, this company’s history and whatever he can tell me. Wow, thinking back on my first day here, I really can’t remember how I digested these things and went home “safely”.

The first week was quite busy, yet I felt quite rewarding because when I was about the leave on the Friday of the first week, Dave said to me “It’s really a pleasure to have me here and I’ve done an excellent job”!! Hearing what he said, I’d really like to die for this company.

Strangely, sometimes I don’t understand what Dave says, but I do understand whenever he compliments on my good work to the person on the phone. There was one time, he couldn’t manage printing a pdf file in A4 paper, and he asked for my help, then what I did was just to copy the picture into word and print it out nicely and neatly for him. After that, I’m considered as a STAR in terms of this kind of “technical” tasks. I really think that he’s easily impressed, what do you think? Probably, this is the way that he manages his staff.

Today, Dave is not in the office and I’ve done all what I should be doing. Shaun, the sales, is in, yet he didn’t give me any tasks, instead, he kept asking me to keep my feet up and make myself a tea or coffee. In order to cheer me up, he also kept asking me am I bored? Am I falling asleep? Am I making a mess on Dave’s desk? Also, he bought us some Mars chocolate bars. So....what a Friday I have!!

I really thank God for giving us the chance to work here and thank God that it's Friday because we'll leaving for Spain on Sunday for a few days.

As Christmas is approaching, wish everyone Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
